A survey for the Sun has found that 90% think that the police should be able to use water cannons against rioters, and 33% think that firearms/live ammunition should be able to be used.

The survey of 2,534 British adults, carried out by YouGov, showed that many were in favour of other tactics being used by the police to calm the violence, with mounted police (84%), curfews (82%), tear gas (78%), tasers (72%) and plastic bullets (65%) all attracting support.

Politicians did not do well in the poll, with 57% thinking that David Cameron was handling the situation badly, compared to 28% thinking he was doing well. Home secretary Teresa May and London mayor Boris Johnson also received negative results from the survey, with 58% and 54% respectively thinking they were dealing with the situation badly.
