Regional newspaper and magazine publisher Archant, publisher of four daily regional papers, 60 weeklies and 80 magazines, has reported a 63% decline in profits for the first six months of the year, blaming rising print costs and a collapse in print ad revenue.

This saw the publisher record a reduced profit of £2.6m as print advertising revenues collapsed by 13.2%. On the flip side digital revenues grew 3.3% to £3.1m on the back of an 11% rise in digital display revenues as unique monthly visitors to the firms portfolio of websites grew by a third to reach 3.6m. Archant chairman Richard Jewson said: "Performance of the business has been adversely impacted by reductions in newspaper print advertising, driven principally by economic factors, government cutbacks and steep increases in input prices.” In response Jewson plans to develop new businesses and take advantage of changes in technology to achieve growth in profits for 2012.
