International charity Sightsavers, which works to eliminate avoidable blindness in the developing world, has appointed digital agency Code Computerlove to help promote a fundraising and awareness drive.

The charity, which boasts Joanna Lumley and Lorraine Kelly among its celebrity ambassadors, appointed the Manchester agency following a competitive pitch.

Code said its proposal put social media at the heart of the campaign, which will be revealed later this year.

"We were looking for a cost-effective way to create social buzz and awareness of our new campaign and Code's ideas and understanding our audiences set them apart from the competition," said Beth Gardener, head of supporter engagement at Sightsavers.

This is the fourth major charity that has enlisted Code this year. The agency is digital partner to Oxfam, PDSA and Refuge and has been working on a project for Greenpeace.
