Numiko has announced that the first of three songs produced for the CBeebies website has gone live, with the others to follow soon.

CBeebies Singalong, aimed at children between the ages of two and five, lets children interact by singing, shouting and clapping, using a microphone. It combines singing along with online games, which aims to blur the lines between playing a game and joining-in.

In a blog, Numiko said: “The task of making an app that combined audio interaction and a very young audience was not without technical challenge. Due to the huge variety of computers, browsers, operating systems and microphones available we’d had to incorporate a calibration process at the start of every song.

“If this was an adult-oriented app we could just tell them what needed to be done, but expressing the concept of calibrating a microphone to a small child sounded tricky, to say the least. With this in mind, we came up with the trick of wrapping the calibration process in a little story about waking up a cow.”

The app was tested in a lab at Glasgow Caledonian University.
