Homeless charity Shelter Scotland has joined social networking site Foursquare, allowing customers with GPS-enabled mobiles to let people know when they are in one of the charity shops.

Shelter is testing the scheme in its eight Edinburgh based shops, before rolling it out across the country. The trial begins today. It is currently thought that the scheme could be rolled out across Scotland over the next six months and across the UK by 2012.

In return for checking in, the charity is offering rewards and discounts, such as three items for the price of two on the first visit and a loyalty discount. Some local businesses have also joined the scheme to offer discounts.

The Foursquare app also allows users to upload reviews and pictures.
