Lord Myners has called on Press Complaints Commission (PCC) chairman Baroness Buscombe to resign following the self-regulation body not fully investigating phone hacking allegations made about News of the World.

The comment was made during a House of Lords debate about News Corporation in the British media, during which Baroness Buscombe appeared briefly.

He said: “I was going to say I was sad Baroness Buscombe was not in her place. She then appeared and she has now again departed.

“I think she might follow that same chain of events in terms of her chairmanship of the PCC.”

He also said: “It's quite clear the PCC needs a completely fresh start with a new vigour and intention which is clearly not there.”

Lord Myners also said during the debate that he thought BSkyB should have an independent board of directors: “There is an opportunity here for the great investment institutions of Edinburgh, London and New York to show that they have had enough with the way the Murdochs have dominated BSkyB and they should ensure the company has an independent board of directors and a truly independent chairman.”
