Congratulations to Mark Smith, of The Herald, for firmly perching himself on the penitent stool this week.

Smith has been writing and editing The Diary in The Herald this week while resident diarist, Ken Smith, remains on long-term sick leave.

And Mark came a cropper this week.

On Monday, under the heading: ‘Cooking the books’, Smith wrote: “We've been thinking about misprins. misprnts. misrints. We’ve been thinking about mistakes after colleague Teddy Jamieson tweeted about one he came across while reading a copy of Grant Morrison’s new book Supergods. On page 207, there is a reference to Nic Roeg’s movie Don’t Look Now. Or at least there should be. It actually reads Nic Roeg’s movie Don’t Cook Now which would be, as Teddy says, one film worth watching.

Fast forward to Tuesday's epistle of The Diary.

A penitent Smith told readers: “So many people told me it was tempting fate to do an item in The Diary yesterday about mistakes and misprints and they were right of course.

“Not only did I not spot that I’d written grown instead of groan (but boy, did you spot it), I also forgot to say that the copy of Grant Morrison’s Supergods we were looking at was a proof, not the final version. Thank you for pointing out these mistakes.

“No really. Thank you.”

There but for the grace of God, Mark...

Meantime, The Drum wishes a speedy recovery to Ken Smith who has had a heart problem but is hoping to get back to the daily grind before long.
