Father’s Day saw a 4.5% rise in consumer purchasing last week according to the UK National Retail FootFall Index.

According to the Experian Footfall Commentary, the rise in footfall from 13 June to 19 June saw a 1% rise in comparison with the same period last year, delivering some rare positive news for high street retailers in the current climate and proving demonstrating that traditional high street stores are still enjoyed by consumers.

Last minute shopping for Father’s Day at high street retailers is highlighted by the index as another reason for an increase, with a 3.2% in comparison with the same weekend in 2010, despite poor weather conditions.

Retail parks also saw an week-on-week increase of 3.6% and an annual increase of 2.4% over the same period, although this performance could be short lived, according to the Index, with the Met Office predicting ‘unsettled’ weather and more rain in the coming week, which will dampen consumer enthusiasm for purchasing products such as garden furniture and BBQ’s.
