A digital gallery experience will launch tomorrow (Friday 29 May) at Manchester Art Gallery, developed by Hemisphere.

The project will reintroduce works of art to the Gallery’s entrance hall balcony which has been inaccessible to wheelchair users despite a major refurbishment in 2002, which led to the decision not to re-hang any works of art around it.

Due to external funding however the gallery will be repopulated with a selection of paintings and sculptures celebrating the human form, with a digital version will also be launched for visitors who are unable to access the balcony.

This saw Manchester based Hemisphere tasked with creating the concept, look, content and construction of the interactive version which included a kiosk which would be wheelchair accessible and fit within the entrance hall area. A virtual entrance hall has also been developed to help visitors navigate their way around and examine the art, with a telescopic camera rig being used to take details shot of the work and allow the user to zoom in and see the individual strokes on the paintings.

The interactive 3D experience has been developed with the aid of architectural visualisers Our Studio.
