From a dismal 77,000 in one key age group to a staggering 1,5 million overall viewers, just nine days later Piers Morgan is, as you might say, "all over the place"

Yet just nine days later, Piers was hitting the high spots with the Royal wedding. "In the end, it turns out Americans did care about the royal wedding, and they turned to a Brit to get the story," said one commentator admiringly.

Morgan with his CNN primetime coverage on Royal Wedding night, even beat Fox News for "most-watched hour in cable news".

Among viewers 25-54, in the 9pm demo he averaged 464,000 viewers in the demo, easily beating Fox’s Greta Van Susteren (356,000) and MSNBC’s special royal wedding coverage (244,000).

In total viewers he reached almost 1.5million - 1,467,000, 70,000behind Greta V Fox News - but double MSNBC.

Obviously, the Royal wedding was a special, but another clue to the huge difference would seem be when Piers has a live "marquee" guest. On the night he slipped on the Gulf oil spill, he was away attending to another of his US TV duties, as a judge on America's Got Talent in Houston.

Piers is also on TV in the UK, of course, with the ITV show Piers Morgan Life stories : A recorded interview with John Prescott kicked the new series off on Saturday. Plus he's got his Mail on Sunday footie column. Busy man!

In the US, on Thursday, Piers came in third in the 25-54 demo with 246,000 viewers and a respectable (boring word!) 790,000 overall when he interviewed Chaz Bono. Stlll well ahead of Larry's figures's but miles behind Fox. Keep going, Piers. You've still got the Rocky Mountains to climb!
