The Chancellor George Osborne has told the Institute of Directors that he is planning a major review of employment law that will include TUPE regulation, an issue that has had a major impact on the media and marketing business over the last few years.

TUPE - Transfer of Undertakings Protection Employment Regulations - meant that if an agency won a particular account, they could be obliged to take over the employment liability of the personnel who used to work on the business.

However Osborne announced this afternoon that he now plans to review this along with a host of other measures which include collective redundancy consultation periods and unlimited liability in discrimination cases.

He told the conference: “If we are to support private sector growth and create jobs, we can’t shy away from looking at difficult issues like employment law. Examining these areas of the law which could be holding back job creation demonstrates the Government’s commitment to go for growth.”

He added that he expected opposition from unions and special interest groups but called on business owners to support his initiatives.
