As part of a £10m campaign by Vodafone which CEO Guy Laurence says shows the mobile operator’s commitment to “offering London the best possible network”, more than 500 branded taxis are to be equipped with mobile phone chargers.

Vodafone customers will also be able to pay their taxi fare with their mobile phones, with a new scheme allowing Vodafone account holders to text the cab’s licence number to a central code with the fare then charged to their phone account.

Laurence claims “hundreds of improvements” have been made to increase the capacity and reliability of its London network – the network having been under strain due to the growing use of iPhones and Blackberrys.

The campaign from the mobile phone group will also see it sponsor a fleet of Heathrow Express trains starting from next week.
