Sony has apologised over the Playstation Network hack which saw customers' personal details stolen and has promised to resume services soon.

Kaz Hirai, executive deputy president of Sony Corporation, yesterday said sorry for the "illegal attacks" which have allowed hackers to gain access to usernames, passwords and addresses.

"We apologise deeply for causing great unease and trouble to our users," he said at a news conference.

In a more detailed statement Hirai added: "We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data.

"In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks."

To stem potential unrest customers are expected to receive compensation in the form of downloadable content and free access to the Playstation Plus premium service.
