Despite the announcement that regular Taggart star John Michie is set to join Coronation Street, STV has said it doesn’t believe it means the immediate end for his character Robbie Ross.

It was announced earlier today that Michie has won a role on the UK’s longest running soap as the husband of former Eastenders actress Michelle Collins new character, who is set to become the bar manager of the Rovers Return.

Despite this, STV has said that his casting will not necessarily spell the end of the character, which Michie has played in Taggart since becoming a cast regular in 1998.

A spokesperson for STV, commented: “We are delighted for John and wish him all the best in his new role, and we are happy that he will continue to appear regularly on STV. It is not unusual for the cast of long-running dramas to change and this opens up exciting possibilities for storyline developments. Taggart is an exceptionally successful brand with a huge fan base across the world, and viewers can expect more of this iconic crime drama in the future.”

It is thought that the full details of Michie’s future on the programme and the implications that the role on Coronation Street will have has yet to be discussed, meaning that the future of the character on Taggart has not been decided.
