Welcome to Yorkshire has said it will no longer appoint agencies on a retained basis after its contract with McCann Erickson Manchester came to an end.

The tourism organisation, which this week announced that it would look to the private sector, rather than public sector for future investment, has confirmed that it will now make appointments for future marketing briefs on a project basis following competitive pitches.

The body previously worked with McCann Erickson as its retained agency on marketing campaigns, initially appointing McCanns in April 2009 before the agency was retained in April last year following a tender review.

This contract has now ended, leaving the organisation free to make individual appointments beginning with The Raft in Wimslow, which created the new TV campaign that rolled out earlier this week.

A spokesperson for Welcome to Yorkshire confirmed the move, explaining: “We will continue to work with agencies according to project requirements but much of the work will be done in-house.”
