The Liverpool Echo will receive a slice of the Government’s £450m Regional Growth Fund, it was announced today.

The announcement was made today by Nick Clegg, who revealed more than 100,000 new jobs will be created and safeguarded through the investment.

Details of what the newspaper will do with the grant money have yet to revealed, though it is likely to involve a plan to create a fund for small businesses.

Clegg said: “Today is a step towards rebalancing our economy away from an unhealthy over reliance on a small number of industries and a few areas. We need to spread opportunity across the whole country, drawing on our many talents. I know that with the right support these businesses can work with their communities and together play their part in leading the country back into prosperity.”

Another funding round opens today, with over half a million pounds still available. It is estimated that over 5000 jobs will be created directly in the North West as a result of the fund, with 2000 created indirectly

Manchester City Council have also been told they will receive a grant as part of the fund.
