Helen Boaden, director of news for the BBC has admitted that flying the broadcasters bid name reporters to the scene of a crisis can be wasteful.

Speaking at the Voice of the Listener band Viewer conference today, Boaden admitted that as the corporation looks to save money as a result of the licence fee freeze, BBC News has wasted money sending its most familiar faces to cover incidents.

However she added that it would continue to send presenters to breaking stories when it was considered to be appropriate.

Boaden continued to back local radio, saying that it should share content outside of peak programmes such a breakfast before adding that any proposal to replace local content with content from Radio5 Live was unlikely to occur.

"That was one idea that came and went to be honest,” said Boaden of the proposal. "It was never quite clear to me what the idea was, I'm not sure about the shape of 5 Live if it had happened. I think they have moved on. That is part of the point of this process," she commented.
