Bath-based fledgling social networking site, Natter, has announced that it has completed a first round of funding from a group of business angels.

The social network offers users the opportunity to meet new people online via webcam and prides itself on being an easy, clean way for people to make new friends on the web.

The site launched two months ago and has over 3,000 individual users.

“This is a huge step forward for Natter,” said CEO Neil Stanley.

“Having bootstrapped the business with our own savings so far, this will allow us accelerate the development of the site and rapidly introduce new features.”

Natter.com uses Facebook Connect to screen users when entering the site; a system of “Natter Points” grades users into different levels of trust. This enables users with more points to moderate anyone abusing the “polite” ethos of the site.

“The site we launched in January was always intended to just be a starting point,” said CTO Phil Harris.

“We’ll now be introducing new features faster but it’s great that we already get so much positive feedback about what we are doing.”

The website’s blog claims that it aims to capture the excitement of using video chat technology and strive to push it away from the rude status gained through other sites that do not acknowledge the importance of a well-moderated experience.

Roxburgh Milkins advised Natter on the funding round.
