Facebook is to challenge Twitter’s status as the pre-eminent social media resource for journalists by launching its own social space for reporters.

It comes as Facebook reports an increase in referral traffic to media organisations of over 300% since 2010.

Designed to capitalise on the growing role of social media in driving news, through features such as the “like” and “share” buttons, Facebook is keen to position itself as a resource for the profession. Justin Osofsky, Director of Media Partnership, at Facebook said: “The Journalists on Facebook” Page will serve as an ongoing resource for the growing number of reporters using Facebook to find sources, interact with readers, and advance stories. "The Page will provide journalists with best practices for integrating the latest Facebook products with their work and connecting with the Facebook audience of more than 500 million people. A series of events will also be staged around the globe to allow journalists to participate in the networks Journalism Meetup Program.
