Publishers, with an eye on the next big thing, are revamping the popular eBook format with a new breed of electronic book which does more than just reproduce printed words.

Aiming to stay one step ahead of the pack Harper Collins is looking to keep their competitors at bay with a plethora of bells and whistles embedded within their most recent title - The Information by James Gleick.

Tackling the topic of information theory, it has proven to be the perfect platform to showcase the possibilities of the format, with Harper Collins taking the opportunity to commission 12 films from students at St Martins College of Art and Design to help draw readers further into the themes.

Gleick said of the release: “I had difficult scientific concepts to explain but now the illustrations are in motion and to some extent interactive. I think that’s a real advance.”
