BBC Radio 4 stalwart James Naughtie has been issued with a rebuke from managers after taking to Twitter to flaunt his stay in a Japanese “love hotel” - in the middle of the country’s disaster hit Sendai region.

The embarrassing gaffe saw Naughtie’s “stupid producer” Ed Pendeville take the compromising snap before captioning it as a “luvve hotel” and claiming his boss had “struck it lucky.”

It prompted a stiffly worded email to be issued to all BBC staff reminding them of the corporation’s social media policy.

Pendeville himself has escaped sanction however as his bosses actually initially re-tweeted the dodgy tweet under the BBC banner, indicating tacit approval.

Naughtie previously entered the headlines after mangling Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s last name with the first letter of his job title.
