Historic Scotland has appointed 442 Design to transform three retail outlets at Stirling Castle as part of a £12m refurbishment to return James V’s palace to the way it would have looked in the mid 16th century while boosting revenues for the historic site.

The Edinburgh-based design agency is to produce three different retail outlets to complement the sympathetically refurbished Palace and, in keeping with the theme of bringing renaissance history to life, 442 Design will unveil an opulent Palace Gift Shop, a bustling Courtyard Gift Shop and an authentic Clan & Craft Gift Shop.

The three shops will offer distinct ranges and pricing levels intended to present a wide choice and speak to an international audience.

442 Design MD David Dunn explained: “Working on the principle of reviving renaissance history, we aim to extend the fantastic visitor experience of the Palace to the retail offering, and make it work in a commercial context.

“442 Design offers a service which is tailored to today's challenging times, understanding the importance of value for money and the commercial benefit of design. This is highly relevant in the heritage and historic attractions sector, where retail revenue is often a vital element of crucial income.”
