Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, currently serving as CEO of Square, the mobile payment company, could be set to return to the microblogging site in a product development role.

Rumours are spreading that Dorsey, who left Twitter in 2008 having co-founded it alongside Biz Stone and Ev Williams, could be set to return, but is unlikely to replace current CEO Dick Costolo.

Speaking to Business Insider, a spokesperson for Twitter, said: “The co-founder of Twitter, and current CEO of mobile-payment firm Square, is in talks with Twitter's board of directors to "become something like a chief product officer."

It has also been speculated that any return could be an expansion of Dorsey’s services as a consultant.

No official comment has come from Twitter at the time of writing.
