Facebook is the most searched for brand in the UK last year, according to new research.

Analytics firm Experian Hitwise has released its list of the top ten most searched for brand names in the UK for 2010, with the social network giant coming out top.

The company said that 3.5 percent of all online searches in the UK were for Facebook, beating google’s video sharing network YouTube, which accounted for one percent.

The rest of the top five most searched for brands was made up by eBay, Amazon and Argos respectively.

"We know that these social networks are extremely popular, but it's interesting to see how much impact brands like Facebook are having online against major retailers and news and media brands. The key for companies now is to make the most of the brand equity Facebook has and to ensure their own brands are represented well on sites like Facebook,” commented Robin Goad, research director for Experian Hitwise.

Last week the analytics company also reported that 2.4 billion UK internet visits were made to social networking sites during January 2011 alone.
