A senior executive at Facebook has admitted that the website needs improvement.

Speaking at a media forum debate at Westminster, Richard Allan, European director of policy has said that the social media giant must improve its service in order to allow ‘exceptional’ users the opportunity to delete data forever.

The website has been regularly criticised for the way that it treats its user’s data, and Allan has admitted that users would be concerned that images and videos they wished to delete would remain on the service. He added, however, that he did not believe that there was any need for data protection laws to be altered, but conceded that there were ‘exceptional cases’ where mechanisms' would need to be found should data be needed to be deleted.

He also highlighted that anyone would be able to delete any data posted on Facebook, although this maybe not the case should someone have posted information to ‘everyone’ or private information had been posted publicly by another party.
