Major brands such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Carlsberg and Mars have signed a government-backed responsibility deal to tackle labeling issues.

As reported by Brand Republic, a key pledge in the deal is the development of a new sponsorship code on responsible drinking.

Fast food outlets McDonald's, Pizza Hut and KFC will list calorie numbers on their menus from September and pledged to reduce salt in their products in line with government proposals.

Is it also thought the government are also considering a ban on tobacco branding as it aims to label unit amounts on more than 80% of alcohol sold by 2013.

The plan will also see Change4Life branding rolled out to over 1,000 convenience stores across the UK.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "Public health is everyone's responsibility and there is a role for all of us, working in partnership, to tackle these challenges."

Since September, five groups working on food, alcohol, behavioural change, physical activity and health at work have developed the plan to improve public health through voluntary rather than regulatory means.

Alcohol Concern pulled out of talks with the Department of Health after claiming big brands had too much influence over the alcohol deal.
