Facebook to launch Groupon-inspired deals service

Bosses at the social network have confirmed reports that a newly daily discount deals service will launch in the next few weeks.

The Next Web confirms the service will initially focus in selected American cities, providing members with the chance to buy products or services at reduced prices.

Facebook users in San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas, will be first to trial the service, which is likely integrate Facebook Places.

The social network says it was already working with local businesses to highlight deals to users in specific areas and allow them to share with their friends.

The service gives serious competition to Groupon, who send deals out to over 50 million subscribers each day.
