Angry Birds developer raises $42m for new franchise

Rovio, creator of hit iPhone title Angry Birds, have announced that it has raised $42m from venture capitalists to fund further games, merchandising and moves into broadcast media.

Accel Partners, who have also backed Facebook, Groupon and Skype, is stumping up the massive pile of cash for the tiny Finnish company – which harbours ambitions to expand overseas and create a new hit gaming franchise.

The hefty sum reflects the staggering commercial success of the unlikely bird chucking premise, which has seen 40m play since its launch just 15 months ago.

It has now grown arms and legs and developed into a global brand with a host of bird themed downloads, figurines, clothing and toys for fans.
