BBC bosses have announced their decision to delay any decision on investment 3DTV broadcasting until mid 2012 at the earliest after claiming the current craze is being fuelled by “hype”.

The corporation said it cannot commit to the platform until it can properly ascertain whether current sets will “deliver/take off”.

It is also treading cautiously owing to uncertainty as to how 3D programmes should be produced and distributed.

Despite these public doubts a number of technical trials are currently underway into the technology, to ascertain the creative potential of the new format and arrive at a uniform series of standards.

These trials include filming at Wimbledon and a Children in Need special.

In a strategy document however the public service broadcaster said: “Much of the current hype has come from the success of recent movie titles and the imminent release of these on Blu-Ray.”

Sky by contrast has been investing heavily in the technology, using it as a hook to lure in subscribers to its sports packages.
