Games publisher Sega has today announced the launch of its first Facebook game “SEGA PLAY! Baseball”.

The game is the Japanese company’s first from its new SEGA PLAY! Brand, which as part of its new digital strategy, seeks to break into the social games market using the Hi5 and Facebook social networking and gaming platforms.

The game enables players to create, customize and manage a baseball team made up of their own players—as well as players created by Facebook friends. It is free to play initially, however players will have to pay if they want to progress further into the game.

Sega plans to launch a follow-up game, SEGA PLAY! Football later this month, with the eventual aim of growing the brand into a series of games with a global presence and support for a variety of languages in different regions of the world.

The game enables players to choose their team name and uniform, customize avatars, level up their players' skills and recruit friends' players. Players can also build up their own ballpark with a variety of items. Lastly, players can challenge their friends in one-on-one matches or compete in global league play.
