Lord Sugar has been appointed as the chairman of online TV venture YouView following the sudden departure of the previous incumbent, Kip Meek.

Sugar was selected for the role largely due to his media experience according to Meek, who said: β€œIt has been apparent for some time that the YouView board would benefit from additional expertise in consumer marketing and technology delivery.”

YouView, set top box which will allow owners to stream on demand TV, was due to launch in 2010 – but is not now expected to become available until early 2012 after being beset by delays.

It is a joint venture between some of the UK's biggest broadcasters and internet providers, including the BBC, ITV, BT, TalkTalk, Five and Channel 4.
