A court in Turkey has blocked Google’s Blogger service in the territory following a successful copyright claim raised by Digiturk, a satellite TV firm.

Several matches being broadcast by the channel were being streamed on the service, which is used by an estimated 600,000 Turkish bloggers.

Google has protested against the wholesale shutdown as akin to attacking a nut with a sledgehammer, saying in a statement: “The process for making a copyright claim for content uploaded to Blogger is straightforward and efficient, and we encourage all content owners to use it rather than seek a broad ban on access to the service.”

Turkish law allows for the wholesale shutdown of services deemed to have breached copyright law, notably YouTube which suffered a two year ban following a similar infringement.
