There's no stopping the world's No 1 social network, at least in the UK. So when will we get time to do our regular work?

Joanna Shields who serves as Facebook's president in charge of operations in Europe told journalists she was excited to learn that the UK was powering ahead.

The number of registered users has soared over the past months. When Facebook last published statistics on British Facebook users last July, the figure stood at around 26 million. That was pretty good, representing an increase of over 10 per cent in just eight months. The latest figures suggests a rise of over 20 per cent since then.

An active user, according to Facebook, is someone who has signed into their account on at least one occasion over the past month. Based on this criterion, Facebook now boasts more than 500 million users worldwide.

Users are spending more time than ever before on the website, says Facebook, with every other registered user logging on daily. Statistics released this week also suggest that the average user uploads 90 items of content on a monthly basis, including status updates, photos or links.

The average number of friends now stands at 130, although some analysts point out that users under 30 - and particularly high school and university students - have many more. Facebook users collectively spend 700 billion minutes on the social networking each month.
