Majority of regional news sites see unique browser numbers rise

Almost all regional news sites have seen their unique browser numbers grow year-on-year, according to the latest figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulation.

The ABC regional publications report found that 90% of publishers’ regional online properties grew readership in the year up to December 2010.

Newsquest-owned lancashiretelegraph.co.uk was the title with the biggest growth, its daily average unique browsers increasing 59% year-on-year up to 19,385, while its monthly derived average unique browsers increased 72% up to 365,963.

The biggest growing Scottish news site was another Newsquest site, heraldscotland.com, whose daily average readership has grown 40% year-on-year, up to 44,253 in December, and monthly reader numbers are up 61% to 892,925.

Scotsman.com is the regional online property with the biggest number of browsers, the Johnson Press-owned website averaging 97,083 daily and 1,843,784 monthly, while Iliffe News & Media site Jobs Now reported the lowest browser numbers, averaging 2,950 daily and 61,851 monthly. Jobs Now’s daily and monthly figures are 39% and 37% down respectively, making the site the biggest declining regional online property in the ABCs.

Of all networks, Trinity Mirror recorded the largest online unique user figures.
