The adage there’s no such thing as bad publicity hasn’t been observed at Facebook with the social media firm threatening legal action against the Daily Mail over a front page headline associating the global network with paedophilia.

On Friday the paper ran a front page splash asking “How many more victims of Facebook sex gang?” referencing an investigation in Devon into the alleged sex abuse of up to 20 victims.

Angered at being drawn so conspicuously into the fray however Facebook asserted that there was no evidence there site was being used to facilitate the grooming of children.

The Mail subsequently amended their headline online but has refused to apologise for the earlier naming of Facebook, leading to a legal stand off.

Officers investigating the case are said to be keeping “an open mind” in relation to the possible use of Facebook and other social networking sites.
