Social media takes credit for forest sale U-turn

The government’s grovelling retreat on controversial plans to sell off the nation’s stock of lumber to charities and private sector organisations is being attributed to the power of social media, according to campaigners.

Toasting their victory not in a forest but on sites such as Twitter and Facebook campaigners have been patting each other on the back (virtually) with #saveourforests tweets and posting excited comments to their walls.

38 Degrees, an umbrella body representing the coalition of tree huggers, led the jubilation with the exclamation “Victory! Government to scrap plans to sell our forests.”
