DC Thomson, publisher of The Sunday Post, and comics such as The Dandy and The Beano, is set to close its Glasgow print production facility having entered into a consultation over the proposal.

In spite of its efforts to retain production at its Port Dundas offices in Glasgow, the firm has said that the operation has become ‘increasingly less viable’ due to the decline in print volumes and also cited financial constraints which the plant operates within.

Linda Holden, head of group human resources, explained: “The decision to enter into consultation with staff at our Port Dundas Facility in Glasgow has been taken with great regret. It has been made on the basis that the Plant has become unsustainable.

“We intend to work with our staff to ensure the best possible outcome for each individual during this difficult period. DC Thomson is grateful to all those who work at our Port Dundas Print Production Facility,” added Holden.

It is anticipated that production would crease at some stage during 2012, should the proposal go ahead.

Last summer, DC Thomson announced that it was to make around 350 jobs redundant at its headquarters in Dundee, while it made around 40 redundancies within the Glasgow print division last February due to the plant running at ‘less than optimum’ levels.
