The editor of The Courier in Dundee, Bill Hutcheon, has announced the he is stepping down after eight and a half years at the helm of the DC Thomson title.

He is the latest in a series of DC Thomson editors to step down in recent months. The editors of The Sunday Post, Evening Telegraph and Weekly News have all taken early retirement over the last year and a half.

As part of the changes Donald Martin former editor of The Herald who joined DC Thomson to take on the Sunday Post was made editor-in-chief of all four titles shortly after arriving in Dundee.

Observers say the moves are part of a strategy of DC Thomson to modernise its operations. The appointment of Martin was seen by some as mould-breaking as he was one of the first editors to be appointed from outside the company.

Hutcheon told website allmediascotland: "I've had a fantastic innings. I am coming up to my 60th birthday and I think it's time for someone else to take The Courier forward. It's an exciting time, things are happening here that I am totally in agreement with, but I think someone else should be taking them forward."

Said a DC Thomson spokesman, “The Courier remains one of the best-performing regional newspapers in the UK, which is a real credit to Bill’s tenure as editor. We thank Bill for his dedicated service and wish him a long and happy retirement.”

The newspaper has a circulation of around 65,000.
