Street protests in Cairo may have toppled a president but they have also shaken up the world of global news media with CNN being toppled as the outlet of choice for current affairs junkies – according to data released by Chartbeat.
The web analytics firm has been tracking traffic to the broadcasters web presence throughout the unfolding crisis and registered a spike in visits from an average of 50,000 to 135,000 (per second) when Mubarak resigned.
This translated into millions of views with some 71% of traffic stemming from social media, the bulk of which came from Twitter.
The Arabic satellite channel has become synonymous with the unfolding events in North Africa not just within it’s Arabic heartlands but beyond too, via an English language service.
