The Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) has stated that it is interested in any approaches for its regional media division, Northcliffe Media Group, which includes the Western Daily Mail, Hull Daily Press and Plymouth Herald.

The Trust has ruled out buying or launching any more local newspapers and has yet to decide on whether to get involved in the new local TV initiative proposed by culture secretary Jeremy Hunt.

"As far as local papers are concerned we've been quite clear that we are not interested in putting fresh capital into that sector,” announced DMGT chief executive Martin Morgan.

"We are open to any worthwhile approaches concerning consolidation if they were to occur."

The new local TV initiative aims to offer a new national television channel that will provide local news and information via a number of regional services.

"We are certainly studying the opportunity," commented Morgan.

"How exactly this operation could be run profitably remains to be proved."
