A former employee of a Connecticut ambulance company has settled a lawsuit against the firm after being sacked for posting derogatory remarks about her bosses on Facebook.

The financial terms of Dawnmarie Souza’s settlement were not disclosed but her former employer has agreed to change its blogging and internet use policy will no longer prohibit staff from discussing their work online, even if that constitutes “badmouthing”.

Souza was cleared by the US’s Nation Labor Relations Board after it was found that as she had made the comments on her own personal computer and in her own time the remarks could be considered as protected speech.

NLRB regional director Jonathan Kreisberg told said: “The fact that they agreed to revise their rules so that they’re not so overly restrictive of the rights of employees to discuss their terms and conditions with others and with their fellow employees is the most significant thing that comes out of this.”
