Ahead of the Six Nations Championships, The Wales squad has imposed a voluntary ban on using Twitter for the whole of the tournament.

The ban will see a ‘substantial fine’ imposed upon any player who uses the microblogging site to post a message, and follows a spate of stories involving sports figures relaying their thoughts on differing matters, many causing controversy in doing so.

Welsh centre Jamie Roberts (pictured), told the BBC: "As a group of players we have just decided to protect ourselves more than anything.

"You can certainly make the headlines if you put something controversial up there, as... players have found out,” he added.

The decision follows former Liverpool player Ryan Babel being fined £10,000 for sending a tweet containing a mocked-up image of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt, the evening after he officiated over a game between the two sides.

Roberts himself has also used Twitter to convey his feelings over the use of Gavin Henson on a poster to promote the launch of the new Wales kit, despite Henson’s absence from the team for over a year.
