999 Design is to establish a Latvian office in a bid to win work from Baltic companies looking to develop products and services for the UK market.

The office in Riga will be the latest expansion for the Glasgow-based company which also has divisions in London and Manchester.

999 director Richard Bissland (pictured) commented that the region offers “first class business facilities having the fourth best IT infrastructure in Europe and outstanding IT and computer science university courses with IT savvy students”.

Bissland told The Drum that the agency started looking into the Baltic region a year ago and, after a fact finding mission last year, interviewed for the position of director of development for 999 Baltic, with Rolands Blezurs appointed earlier this month.

He said of Blezurs: “Rolands is an experienced and well connected businessman who understands commerce and public sector demands.”

999 has been working with Peebles-based business consultancy Cormack Consultancy Baltic, which has been active in the Baltic for more than 10 years and which has helped identify a broad range of clients in sectors such as food, fashion, publishing, jewellery, drinks and cosmetics, and will initially share CCB’s Riga office which is positioned centrally for access to Lithuania and Estonia as well.

“Our plan is to consolidate in the region for the first six to nine months before considering developing our resource in the area. A significant number of companies in the region wish to export products to the UK and their branding, packaging and marketing need to be tailored to the UK/European requirements. We will retain creative work in the UK for the foreseeable future,” said Bissland.

Meanwhile, 999 has also appointed a new director of innovation to work across its three UK offices.

Mark Beever will work with the teams in Glasgow, Manchester and London as the group looks to strengthen its approach and bring creative expertise to brand, packaging, communications, web and environmental design projects.

John Speight has also been promoted to the post of creative director at the agency’s London office.
