London mayor Boris Johnson has taken to Twitter to issue a rallying cry to commuters to “bombard” the website of Aslef, the union representing tube workers, with appeals to scrap plans for a threatened strike on the day of the Royal wedding.

Aslef’s threat to bring London to a standstill on April 29 prompting Johnson to tweet to his 130,000 followers: “'Can’t have a strike ruining the royal wedding. Please tell Aslef what you think. Bombard their website now.”

Fellow tweeter Ken Livingstone denounced the tweet as “crazy” however, urging Johnson to ditch his stance of not negotiating directly with the strikers.

Aslef is demanding that London Underground pays its drivers a lump sum of £369 – three days pay and gives its members a day off in lieu for working bank holidays.
