Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has announced that the company is to develop operating systems which run on microchips, designed by British company ARM Holdings.

During his keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Law Vegas, Ballmer announced that the next version of Windows would work on the chips designed by ARM Holdings, which already designs chips used in Smartphones and the iPad.

Ballmer also demonstrated an early build of the new Windows operating system running on ARM based chips.

"This is really about enabling a new class of hardware, new silicon partners for Windows and bringing the widest possible range of form factors to market,” explained Ballmer.

"It means Windows will be everywhere on every kind of device without compromise,” he added.
