Newcastle-based Superkrush Films has produced a film to showcase Newcastle City Library’s Heritage Lottery Funded Taking Liberties project.

Taking a look at the themes of struggle, protest, values, rights amongst refugees, asylum seekers and migrants within the North East, the project was developed to highlight the North East’s diverse, multi-cultural society.

The footage explores the impact of the character, identity and the demographic change of the North East of England.

Newcastle Library Services Heritage Manager Kath Cassidy commented: “Superkrush Films has encapsulated the aims of the Taking Liberties project by producing films which showcase and promote cultural diversity in an innovative and creative way. We hope that the films will encourage people from different cultures to become involved in a range of other heritage initiatives.”

The Taking Liberties project’s main outcome is a major exhibition that includes a range of items loaned by the British Library, Parliamentary Archives and Tyne and Wear Archive and Museum Service.

The Taking Liberties exhibition is now open to the public on the 6th floor at Newcastle City Library from now until 30 January 2011.
