A US tweeter who chose @theashes as a username is ruing the selection after being bombarded by messages from cricket fans.

Scores of tweets are said to have been directed to the account, apparently owned by a woman in the US, by fans following the ongoing Ashes contest between Australia and England.

The avalanche prompted the exasperated woman to tweet that she was “not a freaking cricket match.”

The Brisbane Times has since named the woman as Ashley Kerekes from Massachusetts whose boyfriend nicknamed her “the ashes” not knowing of the phrases significance.

It hasn’t all been bad news for the unfortunate micro blogger however, her follower count has ballooned to 5,400 and Quantas even stepped in to offer a free one way flight to Australia to see at first hand what all the fuss is about.

Sensing an opportunity Kerekes has begun flogging T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “I am not a cricket match”.
