Bernard Matthews, founder of Bernard Matthews Farms, the largest producer of Turkeys in Europe, has died aged 80.

Matthews, who stepped down from the company’s board of directors in January of this year is thought to have been suffering from Alzheimers.

Matthews is most famous for devising “one of the most recognised phrases in advertising history” back in 1980 when he devised the “Bootiful!” slogan whilst shooting an ad in his Norfolk manor.

This followed Matthews introduction of the Norfolk Manor Farms brand of turkey portions and roasts to the UK, an enterprise which earned him the distinction of Britain’s most famous farmer.

His death coincided with Thanksgiving day in the US, a celebration often referred to as “Turkey Day”.
