Supermarket chain Waitrose is to become the first advertiser in the UK to use a special form of barcode, a Quick Response code, in a TV ad.

The technology allows smartphone users who have downloaded a free QR reader to access websites, apps, or additional information by photographing the code.

Waitrose’s offering features at the end of a more traditional plug featuring Heston Blumenthal and Delia Smith and will link directly to the stores Christmas mobile phone app, which contains new recipes from the celebrity chefs.

Other goodies contained in the freebie include an advent calendar, videos, a turkey timer and a Christmas day planner.

It is the latest phase of the upmarket grocery stores “Delia and Heston” campaign which launched in July of this year.
