ITV Studios has launched a social networking game for its 50-year-old soap Coronation Street.

Corrie Nation can be played on Facebook and ITV.com and challenges players to build, populate and manage their own virtual Weatherfield, collecting characters which they can trade with their online friends.

The game, which references past and current storylines, is free to play but users can pay for extra features.

Patricia Wagstaff, director of digital productions at ITV Studios, said: "It feels truly fitting that five decades after the nation first fell in love with Coronation Street we launch Corrie Nation, a brand new and interactive extension to the show which allows the audience to engage with us through a social platform so relevant to today."

The game has been created by the show's production team in collaboration with Enteraction, the social gaming firm.
